Abercrombie Syndrome

Abdominal pain is a commonly reported symptom by patients of all age groups. 5 to 10 percent of visits to the emergency room in United States are related to the symptom of abdominal pain. Presentation may be acute or chronic. Pain that started within the last few hours or days is considered as acute in nature. On the other hand, if the pain has been ongoing for several weeks to months, it is usually considered as chronic abdominal pain. For the purview of this article, we will concentrate on acute abdominal pain in adults. Presentation with acute abdominal pain needs assessment by a physician in the form of a detailed history and physical to make a differential diagnosis and perform appropriate investigations to find the cause of pain. The purpose of this review is for the reader to understand the common causes of acute abdominal pain in adults which would warrant visit to the emergency department. ​
